Magazine Regulations

The Regulator for magazines is the Independent Press Standards Organisation(IPSO), their role is to take responsibility for protecting individuals rights from magazines and to make sure that they keep a high standards of journalism. The IPSO ensures that they regulate their member and make sure that they are following all the Editors Code. In addition to this they are responsible for dealing with complaint by investigating the member which as been reported, if the reported member investigation proves them guilty they could be fined up to £1 million. Furthermore, Their roles as regulators ensure that they monitor both on;line and printed media to ensure consumers aren't lied to and that the Editors Code is followed in these forms of media. The IPSO which is enforces the Editors Code and written by Editors Code Committee.

The editor rules will have a large impact on my magazine as it will limit me since i will have to be careful about what my magazine consists. This is because my target audience will be a teenage above the age 16 and above which means i need ensure that my product does not evolve anything that could have a negative influence on the younger audience. My magazine will also need to be accurate so it does not upset anyone as it could have a negative impact on the standard of journalism. In addition, i will also need to make sure that my magazine does not discriminate since it could lead to my my magazine been reported to IPOS, as discrimination sex, age, race or religion would definitely lead to a complaint.

what are Magazines

What are magazines?

Magazines is a publication which has been published physically as a print or electronically published. Magazines are usually printed regularly following a certain schedule and they usually contain a range of content for the reader in order for them to be satisfied by one of them. Magazines are typically and mostly financed by adverts because they are simple to put in magazines and display to a targeted  audience. They are also paid by people who like their magazines and would like a monthly or yearly supply of magazine these people are called subscribers and pay for the magazines regularly.

The different Genres of Magazines?

Hip-Hop

These are magazines which update the reader about the latest hip hop news and usually have an interview with a different rapper. A Hip-Hop magazine conventional has a Hip-Hop artist at the front cover of the magazine. They also usually have a plain background behind the artist, they do this in order to ensure that the artist is the main focus of the magazine cover. This also used since it is extremely effective in grabbing the attention of the artist target audience since the stand out more. Furthermore, Hip-hop magazine usually have red fronts since it is aimed at males using red show dominates and power. They do this because the rapper are usually seen as powerful and inspiration artists. The category that the audience of this genre fit into is E and D, this is because they are usually teenage audience which are interested in this genre of music. 

Pop

These magazines focus on the pop side of music and also talk about fashion and rumors since it involves a lot of gossip. These Magazines also use celebrities on their cover pages to attract their target audiences attention. This genre conventionally uses a pink colour scheme since it is aimed at a female audience and by using pink they can remain feminine. This is good because it allows them to relate to their target audience which is good since they are able to gain more consumer of their magazines. The category of this magazine genre would most likely be E since it is aimed at quite a young audience and since they language is so very simple the audience might also be an uneducated audience. The Background of this magazine genre usually has a lot images but still makes the celebrity the main one.

Rock

These magazines focus on rock side of the music industry and keep their audience up to date about their favorite rock stars and when the next concert are going to be held. These type of magazines get different artists on the cover each week since it would attract different fans as they would see their favorite band each time. The conventional colour scheme of a Rock Magazine is usually black since it gives the artists a dark and mysterious look. This is a good colour scheme as it collaborates well with the rocks star theme of black. The demographic of a rock magazine is also in the E and D category this is because it is aimed at a you individual who lack escapism and are interested in dark music. The Background of a rock magazine is that it is usually black or has props in the back.

Print media

What is print media?

Print media is a collection of newspapers or magazines and inside of these there are 2 types of labor divisions. The first one is reporters who are the ones who write the newspapers, their main role is to research into interesting or crucial news for the public to read about. The second division of labor will be editors, these people are the ones who assign people their work, edit stories content and decide what to story to print.

Advantages of Print media.

Print media is a good way to provide people with information which is good because people would actual consider buying newspapers and magazines since they provide them information they might be seeking, for example they can allow to know how the whether will be today or a magazine would tell you about you favorite artist merchandise. Another advantage of print media is that can be aimed at many different types of target audiences since they come in different styles. for example their are different types of newspaper aim at different group of people with different reading capabilities. this is because newspaper and magazines use different styles of writing to attract different customer which good since their is a variety of them.

Disadvantages of Print Media

On other hand, Print media might be consider subjective since it only show one side of the argument or story. For example, the newspaper companies decide they way the person is present, whether the person is innocent or guilty the media decides how the present. This a negative thing about the media since it means they could be bias and not reliable sometimes. Another, disadvantage is that they are not a very popular method of entertainment anymore, this is because people are better off watching Television shows instead of reading since people enjoy visual content that doesnt rely on effort as much.

This text is similar to the typical magazine titles for a hip-hop magazine. I chose it because the letters are separated enough for people to be able to read giving them satisfied since they do not have to struggle. For example, the size of the letter is large making it clear and easy to read on paper. I used this font for my title and sub-headings because they are the crucial parts of the magazine since it allows the readers to know what the magazine is going to be about.

This text is clear and easy to read. It is also very convention to hip-hop since they use it is different to normal fonts used in magazines. This good for my magazine since it needs to try to stand out from other hip-hop magazines.

I chose to use this text for my double page spread since it is very similar to my content page text. This is conventional for hip-hop since it is known to have thick, bubble letters. Furthermore, this font is readable meaning my audience would not struggle read weird font, making it conventional.

Questionaire 

 It is important to gather primary research because it is good way to the target audience’s opinion on what and how the product should function. This means I could use primary research to help me construct my magazine, so it could satisfy my target audience. Furthermore, the feedback from gather primary research is reliable meaning I could trust my research and use it to my advantage. An advantage of a questionnaire is that it is simple to analyze meaning I can easily understand the data I collected. Another advantage is that I could get the opinion of large groups of people easily meaning I could get a response on my magazine without have to actually release it first. However, I can only get the response of people who are interested in my magazine instead of both people or are interested or not. This is bad because I would get know how to improve my magazine to appeal to a larger audience. In addition, some people might chose to ignore some of the questions this is bad for my magazine since some of my important questions might not get response to help me. In my research i asked young adult between the ages 16 to 26 do my survey because my magazine appeal to these ages since they are a majority of the hip-hop audience. This research has been beneficial to me because it allowed me to see the target audiences perspectives and preferences of my hip-hop, which will be useful to me when creating my magazine since it will allow me to decide what feature to add on to my magazine.

The first question I asked help me to see what age hip-hop fans discovered hip-hop. This is useful to 

me because it allows decide that type of audience I need to attract. This question suggested I should aim to attract the age group that are entering the adult life stage or are in the early adult stage. 

This question allowed me to see which gender my magazine is going to be targeted at. This will useful to my magazine since it will help me decide what colour scheme I use for my magazine. This question suggested I should aim my hip-hop magazine at males.

This question helped me decide what the price of my magazine is going to be. The results suggest that I should spend £2 since it’s what my audience is mostly to spend on a magazine.

Parent companies

Parent companies are large companies, which control other smaller businesses by owning a majority of their stocks. Time Inc. is a great example of parent company for magazines. They were found in 1922 by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden, they are based in New York City. They own and publish hundreds of magazine brands. Annually they sell over 350 million copies.

It is important for a magazine to have a parent company because it bring brand recognition to them. This allow magazine to keep their names, whilst they still grow in popularity because of their parent company. Another reason it is important for a magazine to have a parent company is that some of them give you the ability to make you magazine worldwide as long as it is a good magazine. This means parent companies allow you to international with your magazine. 

I would like my magazine to be part of the Eldridge Industries because it publishes many similar magazines to mine. Examples of this magazines are Vibe who is a music and entertainment magazine, which features actors, both R&B and hip hop artists, comedian and more. Another magazine they publish is Billboard who publish reviews, news, music charts and more. They release up 17, 000 copies per week. Third magazine they publish is the Hollywood reporter they main focus is Hollywood movies, but they also talks about television, music artists, fashion, law and more. furthermore, i have chosen this parent company for my magazine because it will help me get my magazine to the right audience, this means my magazine would not be going to the wrong type of place like newspaper stands. Another reason is because Eldridge Industries is one of the best parent companies meaning my my magazine will be at an advantage if i use this company. Also if this company produces my magazine, is is more likely to become successful because parent company will give my magazine a guidance and more income. This means my magazine will be able to grow bigger and will be able to become more professional since they will help me improve.
